Press Release: 12 & 6 Solo Hour World Championships

[ 0 ] March 24, 2012

World Championship Colors

The 12 & 6 Hours of Capitol Punishment is set to host the 12 & 6 Hour Solo World Championships. ”I’m very happy I chose my own race to host the world championships.” says Trey Wilson, race director,  ”I worked very hard the other night dreaming this up.”

There is an official 24 Hour World Championships, but no recognized 12 Hour.  Wilson is not sure why, but states “there should be, the 12 hour racers do half the work as the 24 hour racers and the 6 hour racers do half of what the 12 hour racers do.”  The UCI had no comment about the lack of a 12 hour world championship but did warn Wilson of possible fines and no hope of hosting a UCI event.  Wilson replied “I’ll take my chances”.

And so he will. On June 23, 2012 racers will compete in the 12 & 6 Hours of Capitol Punishment.  While most racers will be battling it out in their respected categories for medals, beer and bragging rights, the 12 & 6 hour soloist will be having the race of their lives for the coveted rainbow jersey. (Wilson has confirmed there will actually be jerseys awarded to the winners.)

The 12 & 6 Hour World Championship categories include: solo male, solo female, solo male masters, solo female masters and solo single speed.

Mountain Bikers Deserve “More Punishment” in 2012 – Registration Now Open

[ 0 ] December 29, 2011
12 & 6 Hours of Capitol Punishment is returning to Capitol Forest for its second year to convict mountain bikers once again in this challenging mountain bike event. The trial date is set for Saturday, June 23 – the weekend of Summer Solstice. The event will take place in Capitol Forest, home of some of the Pacific Northwest’s premiere mountain biking trails, just outside of Olympia, WA. From the elite racing for the top spots to the “Here for the Beer” weekend warriors out for a good time, racers of all levels will enjoy rubbing elbows and socializing in between laps on the course.

Team options include Solos, Duos, Teams of 3-4, and Here for the Beer Teams of 5+. New for 2012 will be a 10% discount off the entire team’s registration for teams registering 4 or more racers, with free t-shirts for all if that registration is received by the early bird cutoff date of April 30, 2012.

There are two race options – the 12 Hours of “Hard Time” and the 6 Hour “Plea Bargain”. (Plea Bargain option is for Solos and Duos only.)

After a successful first year and overwhelmingly positive feedback, the ante has been upped to make 2012’s event bigger and better. A course preview, packet pickup and pre-race party will be hosted Friday. A cash payout will be awarded to both the fastest male and female lap. Additional prizes will be awarded for the team with best helmet adornment – think viking horns or antlers – use your imagination. We have also added even more sponsors to our huge raffle, and South Pierce Fire & Rescue Volunteer Association will be returning with their spaghetti feast to fuel the racers and feed the crowd.

The course is a 10-mile classic mountain biking loop in Capitol Forest. It is a semi-technical single track with a rolling climb and fluid descent with intermittent technical sections. It offers a challenge for less experienced riders as well as satisfaction for the more seasoned.  Check out the course map and elevation guide here.

Friends of Capitol Forest (FOCF) is recognized as a vital steward of our local forest. To show our appreciation, a portion of all proceeds from this event will be donated back to FOCF to support their continued work.

Post Race Appreciation

[ 0 ] September 26, 2011

Many, many thank you’s are in order. Here goes:

A sincere thank you to the racers who came out to participate in this first annual event. Your support, enthusiasm, and flood of positive feedback made it worth all the hard work it took to put on this event. You’ve solidified our commitment to bring this event back in 2012, and beyond!

Thank you to all of the volunteers and support crew provided by the teams – we were more than covered which really helped this event run smoothly.

Thank you to our early bird volunteers who came out before sunrise to help set up and handle registrations – Isaac and Jamie Paulson, Mary Turcotte, Greg Smith and Doug Tuman.

Thank you Josh “the Voice” Morse for race announcing.

Thank you Paul Caldwell and Lori Bielinski for volunteering your time and talent to photograph this event.

Thank you South Pierce Fire and Rescue Volunteer Association for fueling the riders and feeding the crowd. We only heard rave reviews on the spaghetti feed, and it just kept getting better with each passing hour!

Thank you Alan of NW Timing for your top notch timing service and follow up video you shared from the day.

Many, many thanks to our generous sponsors for all of the merchandise, gift certificates, bike parts, clothing and more, and New Belgium Brewing for the brew which was thoroughly enjoyed by all who partook.

Thank you Andrew Dayton for providing EMS coverage to keep our racers patched up, and to Justin from Bike Tech for providing great mechanical service and support for all racers throughout the day.

Thank you Corey Lopardi of online video magazine Discover Thurston for coming out to film our event. We look forward to seeing it featured on your site!

And a HUGE thank you to Friends of Capitol Forest. It’s always great to see FOCF in action. Thank you for all your help with setup, sweeping, tear down, and your overall support for this event. I enjoy being a part of FOCF – your steadfast commitment to Capitol Forest is inspiring and greatly appreciated by many.

Last but certainly not least, I’d like to thank my wife Camille for all the hours she put in behind the scenes to help pull off this event, which simply wouldn’t have happened without her.

Planning for the 2012 edition of Capitol Punishment is underway. We’re looking to raise the bar and make it even bigger and better next year. Stay tuned!
